Deep Analysis on Optical Transceiver Module

May 21,2022

In the network application of optical transceivers, optical transceivers are used in pairs and are installed at the central office and the remote end respectively to transmit through optical fibers. The optical module is a small device used for photoelectric conversion and it is installed in the optical transceiver. It is composed of two parts: the transmitting end and the receiving end. The transmitting end converts electrical signals into optical signals, and the receiving end converts optical signals into electrical signals.

We believe that many users have a certain understanding of optical transceivers. However, when it comes to optical modules, many users do not know much. Optical modules are an important part of optical transceivers and are very important for optical transceivers, so what is an optical module and why it plays such a big role in optical transceivers? The following is a one-by-one analysis of the optical module in the optical transceiver.

The optical module of the optical transceiver is generally used in the backbone network of the optical fiber network. Optical modules are mainly divided into GBIC, SFP, SFP+, XFP, SFF, CFP, etc. The optical interface types include SC and LC. However, SFP, SFP+, and XFP are commonly used instead of GBIC, because GBIC is bulky and easily broken. And now SFP is commonly used as it is small and cheap. According to the type, it can be divided into single-mode optical module and multi-mode optical module. Single-mode optical module is suitable for long-distance transmission while multi-mode optical module is suitable for short-distance transmission.

The optical devices are developing in the direction of miniaturization, improving (electrical/optical, optical/electrical conversion) efficiency and reliability;

 planar optical waveguide (PLC) technology will further reduce the volume of bi-directional/tri-directional optical components and improve the reliability of components. The function of integrated circuit chips is strengthened and the performance is improved, therefore the volume of the optical module is reduced and the performance is continuously improved. The system constantly puts forward new requirements for the additional functions of the module, and the intelligent function of the optical module must be continuously improved in order to meet the needs of the system.
